Cultivating the spirit of entrepreneurship and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

UDs Hosts Seminar on  Animal Science

On May 7th, 2026, the University of Dschang, through the Faculty of Agronomy and Agricultural Sciences (FASA), organized an important seminar in the Joseph Fondjo Auditorium aimed at cultivating the spirit of entrepreneurship and Artificial Intelligence (AI) mastery among students of the Department of Animal Science.

The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to highlight how animal science can serve as a powerful tool for development, food security, and unemployment reduction in Cameroon. The event focused particularly on rabbit farming and digital sovereignty, equipping future animal scientists with the practical and technological insights needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive global market.

The session was moderated by Mr. DJOSSU Lasconi, Divisional Delegate of Fisheries, Livestock and Animal Industries for Menoua Division, and featured two distinguished panelists who facilitated engaging exchanges with the students.

Dr. Charles Bienvenu Djonko, rabbit breeder and founder of Mange Lapin SARL, delivered an insightful presentation on rabbit farming, currently considered one of the most profitable branches of animal production and among the healthiest sources of animal protein for human consumption, especially when supported by advanced genetics.

Drawing from his personal experience, Dr. Djonko explained the foundations of a successful rabbit farming business, emphasizing what to sell, how to position products, and strategies for business development. He strongly highlighted the importance of marketing and branding, encouraging students to “sell themselves” through social media by showcasing the value of their services and expertise.

In addition, Dr. Djonko announced employment opportunities within his enterprise, recognizing the high level of industrial and intellectual potential present among students of the Department of Animal Science at FASA.

The second panelist, Mr. Edme Gabin Djieudji Tchemgoum, an ICT engineer and certified trainer in entrepreneurship at the Support Center for Technology Innovation and Incubation of the University of Dschang, presented on the role of Artificial Intelligence in animal science.

According to him, Africa currently contributes only about 5% of the world’s data used in AI systems despite its enormous research and development potential. He stressed that AI should never replace agricultural and animal science engineers. Rather, students should master AI tools in order to provide well-collected, analyzed, and reliable data capable of improving Africa’s visibility and impact on the global stage.

Under the leadership of the Head of Department, Professor Félix Meutchieye, the Department of Animal Science reaffirmed its commitment to training not only engineers specialized in animal production, but also top-level researchers and entrepreneurs.

Professor Meutchieye explained that the seminar was organized in response to repeated requests from students who desired greater exposure to the real-world applications of their studies and professional opportunities within the sector.

Participants expressed satisfaction with the seminar, particularly appreciating the interactive question-and-answer session, which provided clarity on the many opportunities available to animal science professionals.

In conclusion, Cameroon is in need of forward-thinking engineers and entrepreneurs capable of driving innovation in agriculture and livestock production. As FASA continues to strengthen student competencies in bioinformatics, molecular nutrition, biotechnology, and the responsible use of AI, the resulting intellectual capital could significantly contribute to Cameroon’s self-sufficiency in healthy animal products and the reduction of unemployment
