Dschang hosts National Child Rights Centres Meeting
The University of Dschang is hosting the National Network Meeting of Child Rights Centres (CRC) from March 31st to April 2nd, 2026, in a significant step toward strengthening the promotion and protection of children’s rights through academic institutions in Cameroon. Organized in collaboration with UNICEF, this three-day national meeting brings together key stakeholders involved in advancing child rights within the university system. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the role higher education institutions can play in shaping policies, generating research, and training professionals committed to child protection and development.
The meeting comes within the framework of ongoing cooperation between universities and UNICEF, aimed at reinforcing institutional capacities and ensuring that children’s rights are fully integrated into academic programs and national development strategies. It also builds on the momentum created by previous engagements between both partners, highlighting a shared commitment to sustainable and impactful action.
Representatives during the meeting were drawn from nine existing centres, including those established in state universities such as Dschang, Yaoundé I, Yaoundé II, Ngaoundéré, Bertoua, Maroua, and Buea. Private institutions, including the Catholic University of Central Africa and the Evangelical University of Cameroon, will also be taking part, reflecting a broad and inclusive approach to promoting children’s rights nationwide.
The official opening ceremony, which brought together more than 50 participants, set the tone for the deliberations. In his opening remarks, the representative of UNICEF in Cameroon, Leonard Kouadio, expressed optimism about the outcomes of the meeting. He underscored the importance of collective action and the need for sustained commitment from all stakeholders. “I am confident that your contributions during these three days will make a difference and ensure that this first meeting of the Child Rights Centres Network in Cameroon produces strong, impactful projects capable of improving the lives of every child in our families and communities,” he stated.
His remarks highlighted the expectation that the meeting will not only serve as a platform for dialogue but also lead to tangible results that can be implemented at institutional and community levels.
Prof Guimdo Dongmo Bertrand-Raymond, Vice-Rector in charge of Research, Cooperation, and Relations with the Business World, on behalf of the Rector, in his keynote address, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing children’s rights through research, innovation, and strategic partnerships. He emphasized the importance of academia as a driver of social transformation and a critical partner in national development efforts. He further noted that hosting the meeting is both an honour and a responsibility for the university, as it provides an opportunity to showcase its dedication to promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
Discussions are expected to focus on improving coordination mechanisms, sharing best practices, and enhancing the effectiveness of existing programs. Key thematic areas of focus during the meeting include education, health, and social protection. These sectors are widely recognized as fundamental pillars for the well-being and development of children, particularly in contexts where vulnerabilities such as poverty, limited access to services, and social inequalities persist.
As the meeting progresses, participants are expected to engage in in-depth discussions, workshops, and collaborative sessions aimed at producing actionable recommendations. These outcomes will contribute to strengthening the national network of Child Rights Centres and enhancing their collective impact.
Ultimately, the Dschang meeting represents a significant milestone in Cameroon’s efforts to institutionalize the promotion of children’s rights within the higher education system./
